GM latest OEM to adopt NA charging standard for EVs

General Motors is the latest automaker to announce that it will adopt the North America Charging Standard (NACS). Another one is Ford, which made its plans public in May.

In a news release, General Motors said it would integrate the NACS in new electric vehicles starting in 2025. The OEM also mentioned that its customers will be able to access at least 12,000 Tesla Superchargers starting early next year.

“This collaboration is a key part of our strategy and an important next step in quickly expanding access to fast chargers for our customers,” said GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra in a statement. “Not only will it help make the transition to electric vehicles more seamless for our customers, but it could help move the industry toward a single North American charging standard.”

Access to the Tesla Superchargers coming up in 2024 will, at least initially, require the use of an adapter. As of 2025, the first new GM EVs will include a NACS inlet to directly access the chargers — without the adapter.

Ford will also increase access to Tesla’s Superchargers for its customers across Canada and the United States, starting in 2024. And its next generation EVs will include the (NACS) connector built-in.

“Widespread access to fast-charging is absolutely vital to our growth as an EV brand, and this breakthrough agreement comes as we are ramping up production of our popular Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, and preparing to launch a series of next-generation EVs starting in 2025,” said Jim Farley, Ford president and CEO, in a statement.

EV charging network operator FLO released a statement welcoming the news from OEMs planning to adopt the NACS.

“FLO welcomes initiatives to standardize charging hardware in North America, because we believe it will help eliminate confusion for EV drivers,” said FLO Chief Product Officer Nathan Yang in a statement. “Ultimately, the increased adoption of the NACS standard relates both to its widespread use by EV drivers and the reliability of stations that currently offer NACS.”

FLO recently teamed-up with Nissan Canada on EV initiatives.
