Alberta-based automotive group Go Auto donated $500,000 to the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation (EPSF) as part of a continuing campaign to support the Edmonton Stingers’ Fresh Hoops initiative.
Fresh Hoops is a partnership between the Edmonton Stingers and the EPSF; its goal is to refurbish basketball courts in Edmonton’s public schools.
“The resurfacing aims to make basketball accessible and fun for all students and includes an array of upgrades such as backboards, hoops, nets, paint, and other improvements,” said Go Auto in its news release. “Outdoor basketball courts promote teamwork, participation and contribute to a child’s social, physical, and mental well-being.”
In addition to its donation, Go Auto plans to boost the amount it is giving to the initiative by inviting the community to donate to an on-going matching program. The auto group said it will match up to an additional $500,000 until 2025.
“The aim of the Go Auto donation and matching program is for the community to come together to create (a) long-lasting positive impact for kids,” said Go Auto. “The potential $1.5 million donation would refurbish approximately 75 outdoor basketball courts around the city.”
An event will be held on June 1 at Delton School (12126-89 Street NW, Edmonton, Alta.) between 1-2 p.m. There will be a cheque presentation, along with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the unveiling of the updated basketball court — among other activities.
