In light of increased auto theft activity in Ontario and other provinces in Canada, Équité Association, a not-for-profit national organization that supports Canadian property and casualty insurers, released its list of the Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles in Canada this week.
Topping the list for 2022 is the Honda CR-V (2020 model year) for the second consecutive year. There have been 5,620 thefts overall at a frequency rate of 1.2%. Auto thefts reached historical highs last year, with Ontario up 48% and Quebec up 50%. As a result, the Équité Association said Canada is now in the international spotlight as a source country for illegal trade.
“Canadians expect to see a collaborative approach to combating this urgent and continuing national auto theft crisis,” said Terri O’Brien, President and CEO of Équité Association, in a statement. “This problem will not be fixed in isolation; we need meaningful change and collaborative solutions adopted by auto manufacturers, all levels of government, and law enforcement.”
In a news release Équité Association said vehicles in Canada are being stolen by both domestic and international criminal organizations. They added that the proceeds of these illegal activities are being used to fund domestic drug trafficking and international terrorism.
The second most stolen vehicle in Canada is the Dodge RAM 1500 Series (2022 model year), with 2,600 thefts and a theft frequency of 0.5 per cent. The third is the Ford F-150 Series (2022 model year) with 1,833 thefts and a frequency rate of 0.3 per cent.
